Summer Camp 2011 Preview

Dear Parents and Campers,

The Community Education Department will once again be offering a Summer Day Camp for children ages 3.5 through 12 and a Counselor in Training (CIT) and Junior Staff program for ages 13 through 15. We are also launching a new Junior Camper Program specifically designed for children ages 3.5 to 6 years of age. The Day Camp will have a slightly different configuration this summer. It will be divided into three distinct Groups (or Camps), which will be determined using the age and grade of the campers. The Camps will all share the same themes and run concurrently, however, each Camp will have age appropriate activities deliberately intended to meet the interests and abilities of its participants. Our mission for this summer is to provide a safe, exciting and supportive camp environment; where children are able to take part in a variety of age appropriate activities which encourage exploration, creativity, teamwork, fair play and most of all FUN!

My name is Brian Bacon and I will be returning as the Summer Day Camp Coordinator. My background includes working as an Assistant Camp Director for the Outdoor Recreation Department of Hopkinton, a Youth Counselor with the Boys & Girls Club of Webster-Dudley and a Site Coordinator for the Westborough Community Education Fales SPIRIT program. Considering the success of our 2010 Summer Day Camp, I am very excited for the 2011 camp season. I will be bringing back some of the campers’ favorite camp activities, and adding some new and stimulating elements to an already successful camp model. Many of the campers’ favorite counselors will be returning and I am thrilled to have recruited new staff members who will infuse the program with fresh energy. As far as I am concerned, summer can’t come soon enough!

Summer Day Camp 2011 is broken up into eight, one week Sessions. Each of the eight Sessions of camp will have a different theme and the daily activities will revolve around that theme. Parents are welcome to sign their campers up for any number of sessions. Although, we have eliminated part-time schedules from the 2011 camp offerings, daily “drop in” will still be available to parents. We learned from last year that this type of scheduling helps us create a true Summer Day Camp environment in which we can build a spirit of camaraderie among our campers. Our goal is to create a unified camp environment that your child is eager to return to each morning, and one in which s/he feels comfortable enough to accept new challenges and make new friends.

I invite you to check out our summer camp blog, wcepsummercamp.blogspot.com, where you can see some of last year’s events and get updates about the 2011 Summer Day Camp Program. To register and pay online, go to http://westborough.ma.schoolwebpages.com (click Programs, then Community Education). The members of the Community Education staff are looking forward to a fabulous, fun-filled summer with your child. Please keep in mind that the Community Education Department contributes its net profit to the School Department budget. When you sign your child up for a program offered through us, you are directly supporting the Westborough Public Schools.

Very Sincerely Yours,

Brian Bacon, Camp Coordinator
